interwoven raffia textiles in beige, orange and black

This July, we’re excited to present Interwoven, featuring work from local artist Heather Carroll! Drop by the opening reception to meet Heather and learn about her artistic practice firsthand.

Heather’s artistic practice is rooted in a lifelong love of organization and an intuitive connection to materials. From childhood hours of playing Tetris to curating walls and collaging with found objects, she’s always found comfort and inspiration in arranging things into meaningful compositions. This impulse led her to fiber work nearly a decade ago and continues to guide her evolving creative process.

Textiles have long held a special place in Heather’s practice, particularly handwoven raffia placemats she first discovered while thrifting. Drawn to their texture and rich cultural history, she eventually connected with their makers—women artisans in Uganda—and began sourcing directly from them. Heather repurposes these mats and the colorful scraps they produce into collaged compositions, sorting by color, shape, and cut to construct abstract patterns that celebrate imperfection, spontaneity, and material storytelling.

The arrival of Heather’s daughter, Ahmie, marked a profound shift in both her life and work. Motherhood restructured her time and emotional world, prompting her to embrace a more collaborative and intuitive approach. At just five months old, Ahmie and Heather began painting together, creating loose, abstract acrylic works. Heather later deconstructed these paintings and rebuilt them using everyday materials from their home—staples, vegetable netting, leather, thread—reflecting the domestic environment they share.

Today, Heather’s work explores the tension between chaos and order, precision and play, motherhood and identity. Whether arranging raffia scraps or reconstructing collaborative paintings, her practice is a meditation on care, materiality, and the beauty found in the unpredictable.
